| From the desk of Jason Moore....... As a commercial masonry contractor and as a taxpayer I have become very aware of the enormous amount of money wasted just in my field of expertise. I will continue to gather other experts in their field to submit examples of waste. I believe that most parents of school children never recognize this waste as they take their children into a school building. I believe most people say “Wow! this is a really nice school”, never realizing that every extra (and unneeded) “architectural feature” is another classroom of books, another teacher, and an unnecessary increase in taxes. Will we continue to put more value on the buildings than on the learning? Will we leave our legacy in buildings or in children? Are we so filled with pride that we will choose to look good rather than to educate our children well? Most people who ask why we do not focus on finding waste, fraud and abuse rarely give specific solutions to combating such things. I have taken time from my business to compile some very specific examples from a minute number of schools just in my area. If these savings were extrapolated across the state we will discover hundreds of millions of dollars of REAL MONEY that school districts are wasting. In turn the school districts turn around and then ask the state to supplement financing the school district in other areas. Legislatures that are not willing to look at this one area of waste, fraud and abuse are not really interested taking control of an out of control bureaucracy that seeks only maintain a monopolistic power over Texas school children. Legislators now have the information available to them, what they do with it will tell the true story of their commitment to real reform in school finance.
